Nominal width is a condom industry term. It measures the diameter (width) at or near the open end of a particular condom size, when it is laid (squished) flat.
Snug condoms have a width of under 52 mm meaning they’ll fit those with a girth of around 100 – 110mm.
Regular sized condoms usually range from around 52 – 54mm, meaning they’ll fit those with a girth of around 110 – 120mm.
Large condoms have a width of 55-60 mm. The average large condom will fit girths of 120 – 135mm.
Extra Large is 64 – 72 mm and will fit a girth up to 165 mm.
Researchers like John Gerofi dealt with condom sizes and perfect fit in more details. He examined the available studies and tried to measure the pressure of condom on penis and how much it changes with different sizes.
In his publication he writes how condom circumference should be smaller than penis circumference so there is enough radial force which ensures the condom stays in place.
The analysis suggests an ideal ratio between condom circumference and penis circumference. We have applied this factor to our condom advice and measurement tool.
